Crawler crane quickly back in service thanks to Grammer/Recaro 'special'
Work on the Maasdelta Tunnel near Rotterdam (the Netherlands) has been underway for several years. The new tunnel, which will be several hundred metres long, will connect Vlaardingen and Rozenburg and is expected to be completed in 2024. It is a significant undertaking. According to a spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat, it is one of their largest projects ever. To complete this enormous task, numerous machines are in operation at the construction site. Our client DEME is also closely involved in the project.

DEME is installing the sheet piling for this project. A huge Sennebogen crawler crane needed to carry out this task came to a standstill due to a defective seat. Without a properly functioning suspension system for the crane seat, it was not ergonomically safe to continue working with the old, worn seat. We were asked whether we could overhaul the seat or quickly install a new air-suspension seat so that work would not have to be halted for too long. Due to the age of the seat and its various defects, we recommended installing a new seat for this crane.

EBLO supplies seats for all conceivable machines and vehicles. For this Sennebogen crawler crane, we created a combination of a Grammer MSG95A air suspension system with a Recaro Expert M superstructure in our workshop. This unique “special” combines comfort and ergonomics. With features including an adjustable shock absorber and automatic weight adjustment, the robust Grammer suspension system with front control ensures that the operator does not experience any shocks or vibrations. Front control on the suspension system is a must in this situation, as two joysticks are attached to both sides of the seat. We have professionally reinstalled the new seat between these joysticks.

The ergonomic Recaro superstructure is fitted with imitation leather combined with fabric upholstery. Thanks to features such as triple lumbar support, adjustable headrest, adjustable side bolsters and an extendable seat, the driver benefits from perfect support for the neck, back and upper legs. These seat features also ensure that the seat is suitable for drivers of all heights and builds.

Our technical staff installed the seat on site at the construction site. Fortunately, this meant that not much time was lost due to the machine being out of service. Immediately after installation and a brief explanation of the seat's functionalities, the crane could be put back into service to resume work.
